The Perils of Vaginal
Douching (essay by Luci Capo Rome) - the odor page

Museum of Menstruation and
Women's Health
Lysol
douche ad, Sept. 1928, unknown
magazine, U.S.A
"Now I know...!"
Lehn & Fink, Inc.
Milady
found Lysol hugely versatile!
After using it to clean her toilet
bowl, she could squirt it into her
vagina to douse (1) odor
and (2) sperm - two birds
with one stone, so to speak. Three birds
if she reused the toilet bowel dose.
Sorry, that made me ill, too.
Ill?
At least one book appeared that
described the harm to women the
disinfectant caused, Fact and Frauds
in Woman's Hygiene, which headed
to market six years after this ad.
Not only was (and is) genital odor a
woman's concern, so was not
getting pregnant; men cared
about both topics too. Lysol tiptoed
around that legally delicate subject
in a booklet
a few years later.
Perhaps around this time, maybe later,
the company that distributed Lysol
produced a tampon
- another birth control device?

Below: The
black and white ad occupied the outer
right half of the 11 x 14" (27.9
x 35.6 cm) page.
"[T]he
wrong disinfectant"? Zonite, maybe?
|
Below: That
animal on her shoulder was alive when
she left the house. And those flowers
in her hand, carried the way Germans
do - well, we all know what
happens to flowers around
menstruating women, don't we?
Science proves
it!
Wait, maybe they're gloves.
Genital odor killed
grass in another ad!
