Ad for Menstraleve
"Three-in-one period pain relief"
Australia, New Idea (publication)
24 December 1983
Have you heard women say the
discomfort from menstruation doesn't exist?
Um, maybe you said it yourself.
Well, you would be almost alone.
There's a theory that the ancient
Greek physician Hippocrates defended opening
an artery to releases blood
because he saw that many suffering
women of a certain age at a certain
time of month suddenly felt much
better when their periods started,
releasing blood. (For this theory and
much more see Elsimar Coutinho's Is
Menstruation Obsolete?)
Hey, he thought, maybe that would
work with men and women at other times
of the month!
Doctors bled people throughout
history, probably killing many
including George Washington.
See the links in the left-hand
column and at the bottom of this
page for more ads.
I thank the donor!

the black-and-white ad is on on low
quality paper.
A chemist in many
English-speaking countries is what
Americans call a pharmacy, a place
(legal) drugs are sold.
Paracetamol is the mild pain
reliever acetaminophen.
In Menstaleve, aleve
night refer to the pain reliever
naproxen or more probably to the word alleviate,
to make pain less severe. Or to leave
plain and simple: leave menstruation.
Herbal
remedies (and other) have probably
been used for thousands of years for
unpleasant menstrual symptoms to greater
or lesser or no effect.
