The Museum of Menstruation and
Women's Health
Modess
pads ad, 1938, month? publication? U.S.A.
"Five whole years of your life..."
Is she
depressed but unaffected by the
Depression?
Money couldn't buy the comfort women
have today, even with Modess.
These early Kotex and Modess ads
often show well-off
women, maybe to dignify an
unspeakable part of their lives. The
style, both of the painting and of
the painted, covers up the
wretchedness of their lives. Arise,
proletariat!!
Um, wait a second, it's not Labor
Day yet.
But the ad keeps a tradition of
hiring fine artists to illustrate
menstrual products, even for girls.
Things changed
later.

Can you read
the artist's signature (lower
left of the painting)? The last two
marks at
far right might be N. A., "National
Academician," signifying
membership in
the National Academy, an organization
of American artists that
elects its members, and a common
appendage to signatures of the
honored.
