A discussion of the
letter testimonials, and their
authenticity, of the Pinkham company (in a
discussion of a Pursettes ad with a letter
testimonial)
See three letters to MUM about the ingredients of her
Compound, and one about the lyrics of an
English
pop song, Lily the
Pink, (and
parody of "Yes,
We Have No Bananas" from an American newspaper)
about her.

Booklet
Practical Cooking Recipes (1925,
Pinkham Medicine Co., U.S.A.)
promoting Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound
Previous owners obviously used the
booklet but it's in good enough
shape for our purposes.
I thank the donor!

Below:
Back
cover. The booklet
measures 4 1/2 x 6 15/16"
(11.4 x 17.5 cm).
Only the front and back
covers have a second color,
blue.
The booklet's in terrible
shape; the stains
might come from kitchen use.
A previous owner dogeared
at least one page and penciled
changes to a recipe.
|
Below: Front
cover. The cook's disheveled
apron and great smile
betray the ca. 20 percent
alcohol content of
the signature Lydia E.
Pinkham Vegetable Compound.
America's immigrants - is
that an ethnic costume hat
from Europe? Dutch? - showed
their self-starter character
in undermining the banning
of most alcohol at this
time.

Below:
Part of the back cover, enlarged: I
don't see any empties on the floor
so the lady is probably working on
her
first bottle of the Pinkham
Vegetable Compound, at this sitting
anyway.
Greeting her daughter (above)
indicates she
can still stand in spite of
the
approximately 20
percent alcohol, a boon to
ladies during Prohibition,
which
is when this booklet appeared.
Pinkham ads emphasized the need to
take the Compound often - every day
worked wonders - to
solve your problems.
