Allaire Woodward
& Co. Oak Bark - White
Small boxes of old American patent medicine
for women's diseases,
headache, stomach illness, menstruation, and
birth control
SarahAnne
Hazlewood generously donated the
medicine to this museum, part of her
huge gift of medical instruments,
books and advertising material about
women's health.
Harry Finley
created the images.

The box measures 2
1/4" x 2 1/4" x 1" (5.5.x 5.5 x
2.54 cm). One inch sure is a
popular depth for these boxes!
N.F.
probably means National Formulary.
According to
http://www.medterms.com: "The
National Formulary (NF),
established in 1888 by the
American Pharmaceutical
Association, includes standards
for excipients, botanicals, and
other similar products. USP
purchased the NF in 1975,
combining the two publications
under one cover, creating the
USP-NF." Excipients
are pharmacologically inert,
adhesive substances such as honey,
syrup, or gum arabic, used to bind
the contents of a pill or tablet,
according to my Random House
College Dictionary.

Flabby ulcers
- even ulcers get out of shape! -
apparently is an old term for ones
with loose, raised edges
