Girls: This is what happens
It's important to understand how your body works. That applies especially
to the parts having to do with menstruation and reproduction.

Ovaries/Ova: The ovaries are two glands the size of almonds. They lie
on either side of the uterus. Each ovary holds thousands of tiny eggs that
have been there since birth. When an egg is fertilized by a sperm it develops
into a fetus and then into a baby.
Fallopian tubes: Two small tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus.
They act as a channel for eggs when they leave the ovaries.
Uterus: The uterus is a muscular and pear-shaped organ with a soft interior
that's called the endometrium.
Cervix: The narrow lower end of the uterus. It consists of a thick circular
muscle. In the muscle there's a small opening that leads into the vagina.
Vagina: A narrow and muscular channel about 10 centimeters long. It
connects the uterus to the mouth of the vagina outside of the body.

Outside your body . . . .
It's important you know the parts of your body. It can be useful to
look at them in a mirror - at your leisure.
You'll discover that your body has three openings. The front one is
called the urethra and leads to the urinary bladder. It's here that urine
leaves the body. The opening in the middle is the vaginal opening where
the vagina starts. It's here where you bleed when you have your period and
it's also through this opening that babies come into the world. The third
opening, which lies further back, is the anus, where solid waste leaves
the body.
The urethra and vagina are protected on each side by two folds of skin.
In the upper end lies a small sensitive organ called the clitoris. The opening
of the vagina can be partly protected by a thin membrane called the hymen
or virgin's membrane. In this membrane there's an opening that blood passes
through during menstruation.
|
Hygiene . . . .
The vagina has a covering that secretes a whitish fluid. A while before
a girl has her period she'll notice a discharge from her vagina, usually
in the form of stains in her panties. Don't get upset! The fluid serves
to keep the vagina clean and fresh. Women experience that their whole life
- it's completely normal.
When you wash between your legs, remember to always wash from the front
and away in the back. That way you avoid bringing the bacteria from the
anus to the cleaner areas around the vagina and urethra.
