The naked numbers and facts
Beginning and end
As a rule girls get their first period around 12-13 years of age. Some get it when nine, others not before 16. Women stop normal menstruation around 40-50. That's called menopause. When menstruation stops for good women cannot become pregnant.
How often?
That varies. The pattern differs from girl to girl. On average it's 5 days but everything from 3 to 7 days is possible. Length of menstruation can also change from one month to the next.
How much?
Most girls lose about 60 ml of blood in all. The bleeding in the first 2-3 days is usually the heaviest but the pattern can change from month to month.
Note when you menstruate
In order to find out how long your own cycle is or how much that varies, note which days you have your period on a calendar or in your diary. If you continue for about a year you'll be able to determine your pattern.
Questions and answers
What should I do if I suddenly have my period?
Many girls are afraid that their first menstruation will surprise them and that they will suddenly gush blood. That's not the way it happens.
You'll discover perhaps a light red spot or a little blood in your panties and then you'll know that you have started menstruating. If that happens at home tell your mother or tell a teacher if you're at school.

Will I notice that I'll menstruate soon?
Most often you start menstruating about a year after your breasts begin to develop and you get hair between your legs. Another sign that menstruation is right around the the corner is when you get a little white secretion from the vagina. Nevertheless you can't be 100 percent sure when that will happen.
Is it painful to menstruate?
The blood you lose doesn't come from a wound or cut and therefore isn't painful in same way. Some girls feel a little pain in the stomach or back during menstruation but that usually corrects itself. Exercise tends to help usual menstrual pain.If you are one of the few girls who has strong menstrual pain ask your mother to get a doctor's appointment.
I'm fifteen and still haven't menstruated. Should I see a doctor?
Don't worry! It's completely normal not to have menstruated at your age. Some girls begin early, some late.If you haven't menstruated by the time you're sixteen, see a doctor.
I menstruate at a different time each month. Is there something wrong with me?
No! It can be three years before menstruation comes regularly. Just relax.
Can people tell you're menstruating?
No. Girls who use tampons can wear tights and tight jeans without anyone's knowing.
I heard that you shouldn't bathe or wash your hair when you're menstruating. Is that true?
No. That's just talk. You should even wash more than usual. You sweat more when you're menstruating and your hair can lose its springiness and quickly become greasy.
Can menstruation stop even if you aren't pregnant?
Yes. At the beginning the period can be irregular if you're very upset or excited about something. If you've lost weight over a long period of time your period can also disappear. But it's not unusual to miss a period once in a while especially before your cycle becomes regular. Talk with your mother or a doctor if it bothers you.
The color of the menstrual blood is not really red. Is that common?
Yes. The color differs from girl to girl. It can also have another color in the middle of the period than at the beginning and end, when it can be completely dark.
